USYers invade B’nai Emunah

By Sharon Bleviss

Congregation B’nai Emunah hosted the annual Leadership Training Institute (LTI) from Friday to Sunday, September 9-11, 2011. Thirtytwo USYers and six staff participated in this long weekend.

The teens gathered in the late afternoon on Friday and led the Kabbalat Shabbat service as Rabbi Mark sat as a participant. This was followed by a lovely kiddush and a full dinner for the teens, who then sang and benched and had other activities until 11 p.m. That night, the group was hosted in various homes in the area. (Thanks to all of the B’nai Emunah families who hosted the teens!)

The USYers returned to shul via their hosts in time to lead services with Rabbi Mark the next morning. The services were rousing and participatory, with the unexpected USY song thrown in. A lovely kiddush/lunch followed and the teens again sang their hearts out. An afternoon of programming (with a foray to the beach) culminated in a CBE sponsored taco dinner. (Thanks to Art, Cindy and Sharon for making the dinner possible.) Then, it was time for Havdalah and they were out the door to catch the L towards Union Square at 8 p.m. They returned to shul by midnight and had a giant sleepover!

A good time was had by all by the time parents picked up the students at 1 p.m. on Sunday. And candy wrappings will be found in unexpected places for months to come.
